Professor Ethan Kaplan’s 2008 study, “Does Outsourcing Reduce Wages in the Low Wage Service Occupations?”, has new found relevance in the light of ongoing changes in the United States’ economy. Kapan and his collaborator, Arindrajit Dube, found that wages of janitors and security guards fell significantly when those occupations were outsourced. According to The Nation, this is an example of the sort of change that has contributed to a growing sense of insecurity among American workers.
