On Thursday, April 6, together with the student organization Maryland Discourse, the Maryland Center for Economics and Policy co-hosted a panel discussion on the Future of Work.  The discussion took place in 1100 Tawes Hall from 7:30 pm to 9:00 pm.

TThe U.S. labor market is being reshaped by globalization and technological changes.  How are computers and machines changing the jobs that people do? Are trade and immigration taking jobs away from American workers or contributing to the vibrancy of the American economy? What labor market policies are best for the American worker and the American consumer in our changing world? A distinguished panel addressed these and related issues:

  • Seth D. Harris, Attorney and Executive-in-Resident at Cornell University's Institute for Public Affairs; former Deputy Secretary and Acting Secretary of Labor
  • Lawrence Mishel, President, Economic Policy Institute
  • Ben Shneiderman, Professor, Department of Computer Science, and Founding Director, Human Computer Interaction Lab, University of Maryland

Professor Melissa Kearney, Department of Economics and a Maryland Center for Economics and Policy faculty affiliate, moderated the discussion.
